[NetGalley] I Hate Fairyland! by Skottie Young

I Hate Fairyland (books 1 – 5) by Skottie Young. Published by Image Comics on April 26, 2016. Buy on Amazon (paperback). I received a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

There has only been one other book that I’ve read that had Skottie Young on the credits and that was Fortunately, the Milk. When I saw this on NetGalley as a Young story AND art, I just knew I had to check it out. This was very different from Fortunately, the Milk…

i hate fairyland b1: From superstar writer and artist Skottie Young (Rocket Raccoon, Wizard of OZ, Fortunately, The Milk), comes the first volume of an all-new series of adventure and mayhem. An Adventure Time/Alice in Wonderland-style epic that smashes it’s cute little face against grown-up, Tank Girl/Deadpool-esque violent madness. Follow Gert, a forty year old woman stuck in a six year olds body who has been stuck in the magical world of Fairyland for nearly thirty years. Join her and her giant battle-axe on a delightfully blood soaked journey to see who will survive the girl who HATES FAIRYLAND.

While the story still features a child, Gertrude is anything but innocent. Dropped into the world of Fairyland after she wishes she could go to an amazing world, Gertrude is tasked with finding a key that will unlock The Door if she wishes to go home, which she does. With Larrigon Wentsworth III as her guide and companion, Gertrude sets off to find this key, only to completely fail.

Twenty-seven years later and she’s still searching but she’s nothing like the child we saw in the first few pages (and neither is Larrigon). This Gertrude lives off of killing Fairyland creatures for fun, stealing, and drinking. No matter what enemies stand up to her, Gertrude is unstoppable and brutal.

I don’t think there was ever a page where someone wasn’t dead with a hole through their chest, their heads decapitated, or their guts splattered across the page. Gertrude’s language was also very creative as every swear word she said was replaced by something cute: muffin fluffer, hug off, fludge my life, shish, and more.

I suppose my only complaint would be that nobody could stop her and there didn’t seem to be a way for her to die. Not when she fell and splattered her blood across the concrete floor and not when she was blasted with rainbow power, leaving her broken and undone. In fact, the only person who was able to defeat her was her own greed and ignorance.

Rating: 4 out of 5

Parting Thoughts: I Hate Fairyland was a very entertaining read catered to the more sadistic side of humor. While I had no problems with the characters, I did think everything went according to Gertrude’s wishes and that really made it predictable and unexciting. Even adding Happy as a second child didn’t make me wonder if things would end up differently. The art and color, of course, contrasted nicely to the macabre that occurred when Gertrude was involved. Very nice ending.

Would I purchase this book for a friend/me? Yes

    1. Oh you should! It’s kind of like the in-between of novels and TV, and they’re so much fun~ Just need to find one that interests you :3
